THEN AND NOW: HH-3E Jolly Green GiantAt a certain point, the USAF decided that the CH-3C would make a suitable CSAR helicopter. This resulted in the HH-3E nicknamed the ‘Jolly Green Giant’ seen here. It was fitted with armor protection around key areas of the aircraft and was typically armed with at least three machine guns to provide suppressive fire during rescue missions.
